Advanced riding course
Advanced Riding is for anyone who wants to grow as a rider, no matter where you are on your riding journey. Just passed your test? Been riding many years? Or coming back to riding after a long break? This course will help you sharpen techniques and take your road awareness and knowledge to the next level.
The course is built around the Police System of Motorcycle Control, the gold standard in advanced riding. You’ll learn the same principles which the emergency services use to stay safe, smooth and in control. You will use your own motorcycle throughout the course, keeping the experience familiar and tailored to your riding.
When you sign up with the IAM, they will send you a welcome pack with an Advanced Riding booklet.
You start off with the Introduction to Advanced Motorcycling (ITAM), a Saturday morning classroom session on the theory of Advanced Riding which introduces the system which our on-road training is based on. This is followed by your very first observed ride by one of our nationally qualified Observers. After the ride you’ll receive an in-depth briefing of the ride and an opportunity to comment and discuss your ride.
You will be allocated an Observer who will be responsible for your progress. All coaching is on a one-to-one basis and is conducted at whatever pace YOU feel comfortable with. The training is based on observed rides, followed by a detailed briefing where you can discuss your ride. Some observers use bike to bike communications and or video to aid in their feedback.
The different road scenarios you will encounter will be explained and clarified, building into a pattern for safer riding. When you have learnt the art of advanced riding you will have more time to react to hazards that motorcyclists encounter every day on the road, making you a thinking, safer rider.
Your feedback will be reported through our online training tool Tracker where you can follow your progression during the course.
Sometime during your journey, you can take part in a Slow Riding Course, this is included in the course and helps you learn how to confidently manoeuvre your bike at slow speeds and tight corners.
Your observer will recommend you for your test when you are ready. Usually after a ‘check ride’ with a different observer. The test itself is conducted by a local IAM RoadSmart Examiner and follows a similar format to that of an observed run. You can receive a Pass or a F1rst! You are now an Advanced Rider and a Full Member of EKAM.
