About East Kent Advanced Motorcyclists (EKAM)
EKAM has been raising the standard of motorcycle riding across East Kent since 1992 when the club was formed. In 1996 we received charity status (Charity no: 1055176) with the principle aim being:
‘For the public benefit to promote the improvement of the standard of riding and the advancement of road safety.’
This is at the very core of what we do, and what we are passionate about, to educate motorcycle riders of all ages and from all walks of life to develop their own riding in order to stay safe on the road.
We are affiliated to IAM Roadsmart (the Institute of Advanced Motorists). We deliver Advanced Riding courses on their behalf, as we share their purpose and goals, all with the aim to make journeys safer for everyone who uses the road.
Much more than training
We are more than 200 diverse members, from all across East Kent, who share a passion for motorcycling. Every year we organise a variety of social events and ride outs, as well as tours across the UK and Europe. Our members stay updated on club news and activities through our monthly e-newsletter.
Once every month, we host a Club Night where we invite engaging speakers, have special motorcycle dealer events, run an ever-popular Fish n´ Chip Ride and much more.
We have monthly Sunday Club Rides, Summer Evening Rides and our Associates Ride for anyone currently in training They are all great fun, very popular and capture what we all enjoy, riding and socialising with other riders!

“Since joining EKAM my riding has changed completely. A year after getting my licence I had fallen absolutely in love with motorcycling and my goal joining the club was to keep riding into my old age. Early into my training I attended a club associate group ride. Watching some of the club observers riding really opened my eyes to what advanced riding looks like on the road.
Through my training I improved many aspects of my riding, especially my acceleration sense, forward planning, positioning and overtaking. The skills I have learnt have definitely made me a safer and more confident rider.”
Sam Symonds, who achieved a F1rst on his Advanced Rider Test in July 2025, he also got his course reimbursed by EKAM under the Under 30’s scheme.

“I’ve had a motorbike all my adult life, I passed my bike test in 1980 age 17. In 2023 I thought some motorcycle training was needed in order to ride safely as I age as I’d had none at all. I attended an ITAM day and then joined EKAM and passed my advanced test late in 2024. My riding has improved, especially with regard to forward planning, road positioning, choice of gear, better cornering and highway code knowledge.
What I hadn’t factored in was the social aspect of joining a club as I’m not ‘a club person’. I now enjoy riding in a group once or twice a month, club nights, riding holidays and more training if wanted. You can participate as much or as little to suit yourself, I have made new friends and extended my group of riding buddies. The club has proved to be inclusive and has many women and younger members (we are not all over 50) and would benefit from more.
Anyone thinking of joining EKAM and doing an IAM test shouldn’t hesitate, I wish I’d done it years ago.”
Adam Syme, who achieved a F1rst on his Advanced Rider Test with a perfect score in October, 2024.

“I joined the IAM and EKAM in October 2023 and took part in both the ITAM and slow riding courses. I was allocated Iain Moss as my observer, whose guidance and encouragement were invaluable throughout my training.
In September 2024, I was proud to pass my IAM test. Since joining, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the club rides and trips away to Wales and beyond which have been a perfect mix of fun, continued learning, and most of all great company. Everyone in the club has been incredibly welcoming and supportive, creating a friendly atmosphere that instantly puts you at ease and makes every ride something to look forward to.”
Danny Herbert, who passed his Advanced Rider Test in September 2024.
